Farmer's Market Beach Day Essentials

The Market Inspiration
Summertime is here! It's a season filled with day trips exploring new places and making time to head out to old favorite spots. One of our favorite trips to make is to any number of the different beaches near us. In our family, a good vacation requires good food, and particularly any good beach day requires the very best snacks. The traditional salty, dry snacks are not always the best for hot days out in the sun, a much better strategy is to load up on simple snacks that will help to keep you hydrated throughout the day. Quality is also key and that is where the Farmer's Market is essential.  Here are a few of our Farmer's Market must haves for a day at the beach...

The Recipe (For a Fun Day at the Beach)
1. Something cold to drink. Our Favorite: Cherry Apple Cider! Freezing some of your juice the night before will ensure a cool refreshing drink later in your day that also doubles as an ice pack to keep the rest of your snacks cold.

2. Fresh fruit, not dried. Our Favorites: Cherries and Apricots! Prepare the night before. Rinse your cherries and refrigerate in a container with a dry paper towel. Apricots should be halved with the pits removed, then stored in a separate container with a dry paper towel.

3. Something savory. Our Favorite. Salami, Cheese, and Bread! Choose a flavorful salami and try something different than the traditional flavor. For the cheese, choose something special, not too soft, and if using a spicy salami avoid getting a spicy cheese as well or you'll make yourself too thirsty. For the bread, choose something with flavor, something that you would want to eat all on it's own. Prepare the night before: remove casing and cut the salami into thin bite sized pieces. The cheese should be sliced into similar sized pieces to match. The bread should be sliced thin into rounds and if very large cut in half.

Store your food in a cooler with plenty of ice and cold packs.

Bonus: Many markets also have vendors who make lotions and oils from quality, natural ingredients. With them you can find some great options for natural sunscreen, which is vital to make it through a beach day. *When trying a new sunscreen test it out before your big sun day to see how it works with your skin and how often you would need to apply it for optimum benefits.*
The Pairing
Summer is all about silly fun and visiting the beach, two things that the summer beach party/surfer movies of the 1960s have plenty of. Arguably the best ("best") of these films is the one that started the craze: 1963's Beach Party. Describing the plot would be pointless, these movies aren't about plot but about goofy fun that you can laugh along with (and quite often at) and not take with one ounce of seriousness. Yes, these movies are profoundly silly and very much of their era, but they were also huge cultural sensations that took young America by storm. -Z
