The Essentials for an Autumnal Tablescape

For this post we are celebrating the autumn harvest by decorating with it. We've collaborated with mother and independent floral designer Katie, currently living in Berlin, Germany to brainstorm the top items you need for an autumnal tablescape that will last throughout the fall season.

Edible Decorations
We were still inspired by the farmer's market, using seasonal, long lasting produce for decoration. With practicality in apartment living, I want to decorate for the holidays, but really do not have the space to store large amounts of decorations that I would only have out for a short period of time. That is why edible, long-lasting produce is perfect for table displays, when you are finished with the decoration there is no storage needed, except maybe a little fridge space for your leftovers.

Sugar Pie pumpkins are my favorite option for this, they can be used in sweet or savory dishes easily, so they are ideal in this scenario. And although they are petite, they have the iconic pumpkin shape. But don't forget to venture out and try other gourd and pumpkin varieties. There are so many unusual varieties to chose from that will all have unique flavor profiles to contribute to your cooking. When purchased from your local farmer's you will know that the pumpkins you chose are perfect to cook with and also how long you can keep them before cooking. Mine will last well into November, perfect for Thanksgiving feasting.

Hachiya persimmons are the second edible decoration we are highlighting. The hachiya is the variety that look more like an anatomical heart rather than the short and stout type. They are picked when the fruit is still firm and need to ripen for an approximate two weeks until they are incredibly soft and perfect for eating. This leaves them sitting out on the counter, so you might as well intentionally decorate with them in your centerpiece while you wait.

Leaves, Vines, and Flowers
As you are walking around this fall, fallen leaves are also perfect additions to your centerpiece. Katie found a vine while she was at the park and used it to create a great shape for the display. You can also add flowers with autumn hues to your display. Katie used short vases with small bunches of roses in her design.

Candles
Candles can add a classic yet vintage feel. They also add height and when lit can add a fun ambiance. I got these candle sticks from a local thrift store and purchased the 14" black taper candles from a local craft store.

Paint your Pumpkins
While there is always a place for the family carving of inedible Jack-o-lantern pumpkins. A way to incorporate your kids into your decoration without carving into your edible pumpkins is by painting them with washable kids paint. Once you are ready to cook with them all you have to do is wash off the paint and you are set. Katie had a painting project with her one year-old son and dipped his hand prints in the paint for a personalized display.

With autumn colors and these tips your tablescape is going to be the perfect decoration to brighten up your home this fall. -Z
